What Is SightMap™ Technology, and Why Does It Matter for LASIK?

When most people think about LASIK, they think about the laser. But the quality of your LASIK outcome depends just as much on what happens before the laser turns on, specifically how thoroughly your eye is measured.

SightMap™ technology is the diagnostic system that makes WaveLight® Plus LASIK fundamentally different from every LASIK platform that came before it. If you are evaluating LASIK options and have come across this term, here is a clear explanation of what it does and why it matters for your outcome.

What Is SightMap™ Technology?

SightMap™ is a three-in-one diagnostic system developed by INNOVEYES that creates a complete three-dimensional model of your eye before LASIK surgery begins. Unlike conventional measurements that look at only one part of the eye, typically the surface of the cornea, SightMap™ maps the entire optical system.

That means it captures:

  • The shape and curvature of the front of your cornea (anterior corneal tomography)
  • The shape and curvature of the back of your cornea (posterior corneal tomography)
  • The full length of your eye, from front to back (axial length via optical biometry)
  • Higher-order aberrations throughout your entire optical system (ocular wavefront aberrometry)
  • Your refractive error, measured directly within the same session

All five measurements are captured in a single session using one integrated device, combining Scheimpflug tomography, wavefront aberrometry, and optical biometry, three technologies that previously required separate diagnostic instruments.

The result is a complete three-dimensional model of your eye, sometimes called an Eyevatar, that gives the WaveLight® Plus excimer laser a full picture of your individual optical system, not just a snapshot of one surface.

Why Previous Generation Platforms Are Not Enough

Traditional LASIK systems measure your cornea to calculate how to reshape it. For many patients, this works well. But the cornea is only one part of the optical system that determines how you see.

Your vision is the result of light passing through multiple structures, the tear film, the cornea, the aqueous humor (the clear fluid filling the front of the eye), the lens, and the vitreous (the gel-like substance that fills the back of the eye), before it reaches your retina. Any irregularity in any of these structures can affect the quality of what you see, especially in low-light conditions.

Previous-generation platforms cannot capture those internal irregularities. SightMap™ can.

Higher-order aberrations are optical imperfections that affect how crisp and clear your vision feels, not just what you can read on a chart. higher-order aberrations cause halos around lights at night, glare when driving, reduced contrast sensitivity, and the sense that vision is slightly “washed out” even with a perfect prescription. SightMap™ maps these aberrations so they can be treated.

How SightMap™ Works in Practice

The SightMap™ evaluation is performed during your pre-operative consultation, before any treatment decision is made. It is non-invasive and takes only a few minutes.

During the evaluation, the system scans your eye and generates a detailed three-dimensional map that captures far more data than a standard refraction or corneal topography test. That data is then analyzed and used to build your personalized treatment plan.

Rather than applying a generalized correction based on your glasses prescription, WaveLight® Plus LASIK uses your SightMap™ data to deliver a treatment that is specific to the unique optical characteristics of your eye, including aberrations that no glasses or contact lens could ever correct.

Think of it this way: previous generation custom LASIK platforms, including topography-guided systems like Contoura®, could measure your corneal surface and partially address higher-order aberrations. That was a meaningful step forward. But SightMap™ goes further, mapping how light travels through your entire eye, including internal optics, to build a treatment that is fully personalized to your unique visual system, not just the front surface of your cornea.

What Does This Mean for Visual Outcomes?

The clinical results associated with WaveLight® Plus LASIK, which uses SightMap™ data, reflect the impact of this level of precision. In a real-world clinical study of 200 patients, all treated eyes achieved 20/20 vision or better, 89% achieved 20/16, and 50% achieved 20/12.5, sharper than most patients had experienced with glasses or contacts. For patients who struggle with halos, glare, or reduced night vision, even while wearing their glasses or contact lenses, the ability to treat higher-order aberrations through SightMap™-guided planning represents a meaningful improvement over what earlier LASIK platforms could offer.

A landmark head-to-head study presented at the 129th Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Ophthalmology in October 2025 further validates the precision of SightMap™-guided treatment. In a direct comparison of 60 patients who received WaveLight® Plus in one eye and SMILE Pro in the other, the results were striking:

98% of WaveLight® Plus eyes achieved 20/12.5 or better, compared to 82% with SMILE Pro

100% of WaveLight® Plus eyes were within a quarter-diopter of the target prescription

More than 80% gained an additional line of vision beyond baseline

WaveLight® Plus produced lower levels of higher-order aberrations and better astigmatism correction
