Founded in 2001 by Gregg Feinerman, MD, FACS, Feinerman Vision is a boutique ophthalmology practice in Newport Beach, California. For more than two decades, Dr. Feinerman has introduced refractive and premium lens technologies to the West Coast ahead of any other practice: from the first Crystalens implant in Orange County in 2003 to the first WaveLight Plus LASIK procedures in Orange County and greater Los Angeles in 2025.
Every patient meets directly with Dr. Feinerman for consultation, surgery, and follow-up, including a personal phone call the evening of the procedure. No call centers, no co-managed care, no surgical coordinators acting as gatekeepers. This boutique model is the defining feature of the practice and the reason referring physicians, journalists, and celebrity patients have sought out Feinerman Vision for more than twenty years.
Dr. Feinerman's path to Newport Beach began at the University of California, Santa Barbara, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in 1989, and continued with graduate work in microbiology and immunology at New York Medical College. He received his Doctor of Medicine from The George Washington University School of Medicine in 1994, completed an internal medicine internship, and then pursued ophthalmology at the University of California, Irvine, where he served as Chief Senior Resident (1995–1998). His subspecialty training followed at the Gimbel Eye Centre in Calgary, Alberta, under Howard V. Gimbel, MD, one of the pioneers of modern cataract and refractive surgery. Dr. Feinerman became board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology in 2000 and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.
Before founding his own practice, Dr. Feinerman spent two years (1999–2001) at the Long Beach Laser Center, where his early research focused on artificial-intelligence-assisted nomogram development for myopic LASIK, an early application of machine learning to refractive surgery planning. He founded Feinerman Vision Center (later Feinerman Vision) in Newport Beach in 2001, and in 2004 he opened his own ambulatory surgery center in Irvine. That combination of in-house clinical and surgical infrastructure is what later made it possible for him to perform complex procedures at no cost to patients through the practice's philanthropic program.
The practice was designed around a single principle: the surgeon who performs the consultation should be the surgeon who performs the procedure and oversees the recovery. That principle shaped every decision that followed: the decision to remain a single-surgeon practice, the decision to invest in new diagnostic and laser platforms years ahead of competitors, and the decision to participate in FDA clinical trials that would bring new technologies to U.S. patients.
Beyond his own practice, Dr. Feinerman previously served as Chair of Ophthalmology at Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian in Newport Beach (ranked #9 in California by U.S. News & World Report) and held a clinical teaching appointment at the University of Southern California Department of Ophthalmology, which concluded in 2019. The Newport Beach clinical office remains the practice's sole location; surgeries continue to be performed at the Irvine ambulatory surgery center.
Feinerman Vision's history tracks closely with the modern history of refractive and premium lens surgery in the United States. The practice has consistently been among the first U.S. sites to adopt technologies after FDA approval, and in several cases has been the first on the West Coast.
Dr. Feinerman has served as Principal Investigator on more than ten FDA-registered clinical trials for intraocular lenses, excimer laser platforms, ophthalmic surgical devices, and pharmaceutical treatments for post-surgical inflammation. Sponsors have included Bausch + Lomb, Abbott Medical Optics, and Icon Bioscience. This direct involvement in device development is how the practice is typically able to offer new technology on the day of U.S. approval: Dr. Feinerman already knows the platform from the trial data.

The practice has additionally participated in trials for presbyopia-correcting and toric IOLs from Abbott Medical Optics (Tecnis Toric ZCT300/ZCT400), anti-inflammatory therapies from Icon Bioscience (IBI-10090 Phase 3), corneal wound-healing compounds from Senju Pharmaceutical, and several topography-guided and ray-tracing LASIK platforms.

Founded in 2003, Operation In-Sight is the nonprofit program Dr. Feinerman established to provide free cataract and laser eye surgeries to public servants, individuals with financial need, and underserved patients who would otherwise be unable to access or afford modern ophthalmic care. The 2004 opening of Dr. Feinerman's own Irvine ambulatory surgery center is what made the program operationally possible: owning the surgical infrastructure meant he could donate both his skill and the facility time required for each procedure.
U.S. recipients have included a Los Angeles City Fire Department firefighter who was struggling to see while driving fire trucks at LAX, an FBI applicant whose near-sightless eye was the only thing preventing her from completing the agency's requirements, a caregiver unable to perform her work due to deteriorating vision, and an elderly woman whose landlord brought her in after realizing she could no longer see well enough to write a check.
