One of the most common questions patients ask before WaveLight® Plus LASIK is what recovery will actually feel like. The good news is that recovery from WaveLight® Plus is one of the fastest of any refractive surgery, with most patients returning to work, driving, and daily routines within 24 to 48 hours.
However, every patient heals slightly differently, and understanding the full recovery timeline will help you plan accordingly and know what to expect at each stage.
Immediately After Surgery: The First Few Hours of LASIK Recovery
The WaveLight® Plus procedure itself takes about 15 minutes for both eyes, with the laser portion lasting just seconds per eye. Once the procedure is complete, you will rest briefly in the office, then be driven home by a companion. You should not drive the day of surgery.
In the first few hours you may experience:
- Blurred or hazy vision, similar to looking through water
- Mild burning, scratchiness, or a sensation of something in the eye
- Watering and light sensitivity
- The urge to close your eyes and rest
These sensations are completely normal and typically last only a few hours. Vision can fluctuate between clearer and hazier during this window as the eyes begin healing, which can feel disorienting but is an expected part of recovery.
The best thing you can do during this window is take a nap. At Feinerman Vision we offer every patient a mild sedative before surgery to reduce anxiety, which makes taking a nap afterwards easy. Sleep is the most effective part of early healing, and most patients wake up with dramatically clearer vision than they had just hours before.
Day 1 After Surgery: Rapid Improvement
Within 24 hours, the vast majority of patients notice significantly improved vision, often sharp enough to drive, return to work at a computer, and resume most normal activities. You will have a brief follow-up appointment with Dr. Feinerman the morning after surgery to confirm healing is on track.
What to expect on Day 1:
- Vision clear enough for most daily tasks
- Mild dryness or occasional fluctuations in clarity
- Sensitivity to bright light, which protective sunglasses help manage
- Continue prescribed antibiotic and anti-inflammatory eye drops (started 4 hours after surgery)
Dr. Feinerman personally calls every patient the evening of surgery to confirm recovery is going smoothly. If patients have any questions, they can simply text him at any time.
Days 2 to 7: Functional Vision Continues to Sharpen
During the first week, vision continues to stabilize and sharpen. Most patients are back to normal work, exercise, and social activities by Day 2 or 3. The corneal flap (the thin layer of tissue created during surgery to access the underlying cornea) is healing during this window and is protected by a natural bond that strengthens over time.
Activity guidelines for the first week:
- No rubbing the eyes
- No swimming, hot tubs, or direct water contact with the eyes
- Avoid dusty or smoky environments
- Continue prescribed eye drops on schedule
- Use preservative-free artificial tears as needed for dryness
- Wear protective sunglasses outdoors
Exercise, light activity, and computer work are typically fine by Day 2. Contact sports, swimming, and makeup application should wait at least two weeks.
Weeks 2 to 4: Continued Refinement
Between weeks two and four, visual acuity typically continues to sharpen as subtle healing completes at the cellular level. Many patients experience clearer vision during this window, and any residual dryness generally continues to improve.
Night vision also continues to refine during this period. Patients who had pre-existing halos or glare with glasses often notice meaningful improvement as higher-order aberrations are corrected by WaveLight® Plus. (Learn more about WaveLight® Plus and LASIK night vision.)
You will return for a scheduled follow-up appointment during this period to confirm healing is progressing as expected. Dr. Feinerman reviews each visit personally rather than handing follow-up care to an outside optometrist.
Month 1 to Month 3: Full Stabilization
By the one-month mark, the majority of patients have achieved stable vision close to their final outcome. Over the following two to three months, residual dryness improves, night vision continues to refine, and the optical correction becomes permanent.
In the Bala real-world study of 200 patients, 100% achieved 20/20 or better, 89% achieved 20/16 or better, and 50% achieved 20/12.5, a level of visual acuity sharper than most patients had experienced with glasses or contacts. (He C, Bala C. J Cataract Refract Surg. 2023;49(11):1140-1146.)
If an enhancement procedure is needed, it is typically performed no earlier than three months after the original surgery to ensure vision has fully stabilized. In Dr. Feinerman’s practice, fewer patients require enhancement with WaveLight® Plus than with previous generation platforms.
What Makes WaveLight® Plus Recovery Different
WaveLight® Plus recovery follows the same general timeline as other advanced LASIK procedures, but with two clinically meaningful differences:
Faster return to sharp vision. Because WaveLight® Plus corrects higher-order aberrations in addition to your prescription, many patients notice the final quality of their vision sooner than they would with previous generation platforms. This is a result of the laser optimizing the full optical system in one treatment.
Less likelihood of subsequent enhancement. The precision of the SightMap™ scan means fewer patients require an enhancement procedure later. If enhancement is needed, it is much simpler to perform than for patients who had SMILE or other lenticule-based procedures.
Tips for a Smooth Recovery
- Arrange a driver for the day of surgery
- Plan to rest the afternoon of surgery with screens and lights minimized
- Fill your prescription drops before surgery day so they are ready at home
- Have preservative-free artificial tears on hand for the first month
- Sleep with the protective shields the first night to prevent accidental rubbing
- Avoid wearing eye makeup for one week
A Note From Dr. Feinerman
Recovery from WaveLight® Plus is one of the most reliable aspects of the procedure. In my practice, the overwhelming majority of patients return to work within one to two days and describe the recovery experience as easier than they expected.
The key to a smooth recovery is following post-operative instructions carefully, keeping your follow-up appointments, and not rushing high-intensity activities in the first two weeks. The surgery itself takes 15 minutes. The healing does the rest on its own.
As with every case I perform, I personally see each patient for their follow-up visits and am available directly if questions arise during recovery. Continuity of care from the surgeon who performed your procedure makes a meaningful difference in how quickly any questions get resolved.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long after WaveLight® Plus LASIK can I drive?
Most patients can drive within 24 hours of surgery, typically after their Day 1 follow-up appointment with Dr. Feinerman. You should not drive the day of surgery and should arrange for a companion to take you home. By the next day, the vast majority of patients have vision clear enough to drive safely, though comfort with night driving may take a few additional days as residual dryness and light sensitivity resolve.
When can I exercise after WaveLight® Plus LASIK?
Light exercise such as walking is fine starting Day 2. Most patients return to gym workouts, running, and cycling within 3 to 5 days. Swimming, hot tubs, and direct water contact with the eyes should be avoided for one week. Contact sports and activities with a risk of direct eye impact should wait at least two weeks to allow the corneal flap to fully stabilize.
Is dryness after WaveLight® Plus LASIK permanent?
No. Dryness after LASIK is typically temporary and improves significantly over the first one to three months as the corneal nerves regenerate. Preservative-free artificial tears are recommended during recovery to keep the eyes comfortable and support healing. For patients with pre-existing dry eye, Dr. Feinerman evaluates tear film quality before surgery and recommends pre-treatment when needed to minimize post-operative dryness.
When can I wear makeup again after LASIK?
Avoid all eye makeup, including mascara, eyeliner, and eyeshadow, for one week after surgery. When you resume makeup use, start with a fresh tube of mascara and new eye makeup products to reduce the risk of bacterial contamination. Facial moisturizer and non-eye makeup can be used starting the day after surgery, avoiding contact with the eye area.
